The Emir of Kanam, Alhaji Mohammadu Babangida has called for the inclusion of the roles of traditional institutions in the nation’s constitution.

He posited that doing so will give the institution more powers and will go a long way in strengthening it.

Babangida made the call on Saturday at the Investiture of the Emir of Wase, in Plateau State,
Alhaji Mohammadu Sambo, as Patron of the Plateau Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

The Emir was reacting to the paper presented by Dr Garba Abari, the Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) at the event.

The paper was tagged “The Role of the Traditional Institutions in Citizens Engagement and National Development”

According to the Emir, the traditional institutions play key roles in the growth and development of the society, hence the need for the inclusion of these roles in the nation’s Constitution.

“We are all know the critical roles the traditional institutions play in promoting peaceful coexistence in our communities and keeping our society intact.

“So, I will want to call on government to include the roles of the traditional institutions in the Constitution.

“If that is done, it will give the institution more powers and also go a long way to strengthen it,” he said.

The traditional ruler called on media practitioners to push for the inclusion through their various reportage.

Abari had said that despite the relegation of the traditional institution to the background, they still have a major role to play in the socioeconomic development of the country.

He called for more synergy between journalists and the traditional institutions.
